Round 1 Results, Round 2 theme

08Apr10

Hey guys, sorry for getting these in a day or so late. I got all the results from the judges today and I quickly compiled them.

Btw, I don’t actually know if the microphone worked or not XD

Quick shoutout to the 5 judges and 1 helper – you are all made of awesomesauce. I forgot to mention it in my PMs and video, but the judges went well out of their way to write comments and stuff. I think most judges wrote more than the specified number of comments, and not only that, one judge commented on almost ALL of the entries D: Thanks x 1000000 – amazing stuff.

I’ve filmed the video for the weapons and I’ll be sending out the Round 2 Start PMs after I finish typing this post up. I’m on a slow connection so this will be fun -_-

Thank you to all 24 participants who submitted or showed interest and support for the competition. I never expected to reach beyond 16 contestants, let alone get 24!~ I hope for those who didn’t get to Round 2, or it was the first time they’ve participated or joined for fun, I hope that this competition has given you an opportunity to warm yourself up either for future walls or learn something that you’d like to take away with you for your future graphic design adventures – either in the judging comments, the explorations you went through while making your own entry, or through the other worlds presented in your fellow contestants.

My video sounded like gibberish even with the microphone,  but I mentioned that if I’m not travelling at the end of the year, I might have another competition – but it’ll be parapara style – ie. non stop. After Round 1 you have Round 2 immediately and it keeps going. You won’t know if you’re knocked out until like you’re in the middle of making your Round 2 wallpaper lolololol. I think it’ll be fun, so if you missed out on this competition, I hope to see you at the Parapara walling contest!

How to structure this post? Well, I’ll put them in the order from left to right of the competition chart. All scores are averages of all scores given.

PS: Comment on this blog entry with a link to your Minitokyo Gallery URL so I can throw it up onto this post. I will not be hosting the wallpapers on wordpress due to request. If you’re a visitor, hi! Please download or visit Minitokyo to look at the entries ^^

“Incredible blending is accomplished with the right artistic choices for colors–this wall should set an example for how one creates an epic scene. Spot-on texture and color choices make an otherwise simplistic background seem adequately filled, even if the darker corners seem slightly overtextured. The only complaint here is the airplane. The static sparks need more variation in size and stronger play on light to function. The motion blur should become bigger as we move away from the center of the spindles. And finally, the shading should be sharper to reflect the style of the vector.”

“The colors and given concept is nice though I do fear the scan might confuses others.”

“It’s not really a clear concept of the artist world, I do think more time twoards it though could’ve explained alot more. Other than that I think it’s a fantastic job and would look even more fantastic with more work done.”

“You did a good job with placement (esp with perspective which not alot of people can do well), but the execution of this piece needs alot of work. Composition wise, the painting is a mess and essentially unfinished. The colors, shades and hues are there but not properly cleaned. Also for a scenic piece like this, its ok in the planning stages to draw really straight lines, but you really dont want the background to look too “perfect.””

“Nice work in extending the scan and modified it abit. Though I think the colours of the background look pale compared to the character. The shadings on the background look a little messed up and flat. I think you should add more shadows and define them neatly with the line arts. The castle at the back should be softer since it’s located far away. And I don’t get the idea of adding clock shape on the sky.”

“I like the overall look, but feel the gears are a little superfluous. It’s a very pretty scenic wall, but I would have liked to have seen more of a tie in with the “my world” theme.”

“It’s kind of difficult for me to comment on this wall. I get where its going and I appreciate the time put into the vision, but the conception of this piece doesnt sit well with me. I know shes meant to be “blending into the background” but the execution doesnt seem quite right. The color scheme is well executed, but I personally find it too strong to be appealing. The technical aspects are also rather strong, though you got a little lazy on the ear. I know one judge might complain about the circular dots so I will say for the record that I think they SHOULD be circular to fit the general feel.”

“Beautiful color scheme and great job on the elf girl. Not sure about the background and those beet-looking blobs. Perhaps more of a clear tie in with the theme would help.”

“Love this idea… though I think a little more could have been done to go with the theme. “Welcome to my World” offers such a big realm of possibilities! I expected to see a bit more on the illustration side of the book– or more blurring of the line between fantasy and reality. Maybe some water droplets coming out of the book. Remember to have fun with the theme!”

“There are so many wonderful things going for this particular wall, but the indecisive stylistic choices are apparent even at first glance. With the combination of flat vector shapes, outline-less agenda and gradient, shadeless shapes, there are too many indicators of depth which results in a confused product. The cleanness of the shapes also contradict the rather scenic sensibility. And the skin seems much too cool because of the uninteresting shadow colors. More lights, lower and further away would fill the empty gradient background space that seems too flat at the moment.”

“The ideas are put nicely along with the saturated tone and happy expressions. However, the characters need more shades to fit with the night theme. The main theme of this round, on the other hand, is not clearly portrayed.”

“At first I didn’t quite get what the artist wanted to show, but then I thought things trought and ah~, this is really cool, but I think the wall could be more detalied.”

“Although it is adorable…I’m confused on exactly what the artist is trying to show us about their world.”

“Well…besides that they must love celebration or something, the BG beyond them could use more work…looks alot like they’re underneath fire. It’s hard to tell where they are, looks alot like an abstract/scene idea not finished yet.”

“I enjoy the general color scheme immensely. The elements also have a very great potential to suggest movement which is always great to see in walls. Unfortunately, there are alot of technical aspects that hinder the success.:
1) The streaks of lighting wash out and blur the cleaner edges which produces a haphazard feel to the entire wall, especially aruond his jacket and his hair.
2) The rungs of the fence are too large, thick and geometric and this object really hurt the sense of movement. I suggest moving it back a few feet and trying to create a very subtle “warped” perspective which will just help it seem less stiff.”

“I admire the sense of detail and the careful placement of objects to create a simple but professional composition. But this piece lacks coherence in terms of color and lighting, with some parts much warmer in tone than others. The lighting also seems last minute, washing out many parts of the wall and creating a messier look. Parts of the piece, especially skin and background elements seem unfinished with their raw edges and dirtier shading.”

“Beautifully soft painting work with thin vectored lines. It is somehow look cluttered with elements, but it does fit the theme nicely.”

“I think this wall shows the world that most of the girls want to live in. Really well made and the theme is shown beautifully in there.”

“I adore how this artist created her world around the character, I can clearly see all her interest on the wall. I like the sketchy look and the soft coloring given, I do think the highlights need more refining…the puffs of whiteness do nothing for the wall. Perhaps a more warmer gradient to give a sense that morning is shining on her. Other than those minor factors I enjoy the presentation of the theme, very well given.”

“Don’t know, ermm, it’s just to simple, like, the theme is in there, but the wall lacks something.”

“I like how the waller took the approach. I do think perhaps a more scene look would’ve been more better for this. Perhaps having the cat sitting on some dresser or bed stand and then have the window behind it. Having it like this doesn’t pull much attention, it’s too dark to catch eyes in. The designs and creativity is it’s best traits.”

“I love it when centered characters make a comeback in a very bold but appropriate way. The forced perspective contructs an exaggerated mood that works perfectly to you advantage.
Technical aspects:
1) The background seems too cyan in tone and too bright to match the foreground, especially because the cyan parts are pushed against a rather uninteresting and unappealing shade of gray. Use of more blues, and darker shadows would have helped the piece blend. The tears, while they contribute to the message, need more finesse to become convincing.
2) I get the title text, but aside from making text interesting you have to always make it readable. Remember, people can read words as long as the first letter and last letter are correct, so in general changing these two letters makes it awkward for the reader to register.”

“I’m so amazed seeing the water droplets look so flawlessly done. The monotone color interacts wonderfully, creating a glowing effect to the piece. The text is the only thing that seems wrongly placed or designed, and either way I feel there’s no need for a text here.”

“The rain brings life to this, really well done, but I think the atmosphere on the wall just don’t tell me “welcome to my world” is more like something sad, can’t really say it.”

“There are many things that I appreciate about this wall: the picture book frame, the delicate colors. However, more time needed to be spent positioning the objects.
1) the text is outright unnecessary. A title text in a plainer font somewhere on the bottom or on the side would have sufficed.
2) The centered character breaks from the off-center positioning of the frame.
3) The colors on the character are too saturated to fit the pastels.”

“Nice balance between grays and colours. Edges could be less jagged. Typography would look better with less space between lines.”

“The stylistic approach, while characteristic and offering little to the genre, is quite stunning. While the colors make a great first impression, the scan choice really sets this wall up for success, and coloring-out-of-turn adds an extra punch of movement.
1) the lines lack spontaneity and form in the way that the coloring does. In places they are too thick or too uniform to give a sense of movement
2) the title typography is spot-on in its professional taste, but the other text work could use more effort. The overlapping doesn’t happen in a deliberate manner which makes it seem random, rather than chaotic. The warped text remains stiff and the words emanating from the mouth clash too much with the background as to be unreadable and uninteresting. The text on the bottom could use to be closer vertically instead of overlapping which create clutter. Try more shades of gray or variation in font style for words you want to emphasize.”

“Definitely an eye candy for desktop. Bright and colourful, perfectly fits the idea of the wall. Great use of texts but it doesn’t display much of the theme of this round.”

“Absolutely loved this wall. The concept is clean and modern and the theme is clearly there.”

“Hands down amazing. Great concept and execution”

“I cannot express how in love with this piece I am. Every element from the ground to the sky to the little pool and brooms is perfectly placed without looking too well planned or awkward. The color scheme is in a league of its own, drawing on inspirations rarely seen in the manga/anime world. From corner to corner, this wall looks professional, even if it hasnt all been done from scratch. Finally, the overall texture is spot on delightful. My main complaint is that the lineart for the foreground seems too black and thick.”

“The choice to go with very flat coloring was a good one here, showing yet again that a piece doesnt need painting or complex vectoring to work. However, the colors blend together too much and make this a rather faded and blase piece. Brighter colors would can still capture the gloomy feel without being bland. I’m not sure how i feel about the stroke lineart, IMO it looks decent in this case but shape layers would have been even better.”

“This chaotic jumble of images is well designed. Piquing interest and drawing the viewer’s eye through the whole piece. Technical aspects:
1)It is difficult to comment on the technical aspects of the center piece, but the blue crowds the other objects, especially the roses which seem to disappear. More color variation may have helped isolate the work on individual objects as well as create greater depth. You may also consider making a larger center-of-center-object, to draw the viewer’s attention.
2) The off-tandem swirls and text are extremely stiff, both because of their placement (aka they shapes that are drawn) and in terms of actual shape. Warped text will always remain stiff in absence of variation in size, style and color especially when your corners lack flow. The blue lines are especially restrained and lack the effortless touch of the center object.”

“I like how the artist used a different angle for the scan and used text more over brushes. The creativity and tecnique are it’s strong suits. I think this fits the theme nicely, I believe I can sense the persons interest and what they feel they are mostly surrounded in.”

“Empty spaces are good, but sometimes it creates a plain-looking effect for the wall against the overly-complex design. But of course the design is fantasticallly done, and the texts add up more in intrepretating the theme.”

“Like the idea, but seems a little too cluttered.”

“The black gradient BG keeps your attention on the center, there is certaintly alot to look at.”

“What a great piece! It presents an edgier twist on the popart/alice-in-wonderland inspired creation of chaos and insanity. The colors are certainly unique in their sensibility, coupling harsh blacks with a Westernized scheme.”

“Wow I really did not think I was going to give any full scores, but this wall is just beyond amazing in every aspect. I will start from most impressive. The visionary expertise shines through from the placement of the scan to the background elements. The technique and color choices create a scan-like feel to the entire composition.
1) The face could use some slight tweaking to create more texture
2) the background which needs more lavenders + less saturated blues
3) the blurry edges for some of the painting in the background and those blobs on the record could use to be cleaned up.”

“” Very interesting piece! I like the composition, not quite sure about the execution of the theme… unless the world consists of music lovers? Solid techniques and composition though– excellent wall overall.”

“I have to admit I didn’t like it from the thumb, but fullview presents a luscious scene dipped in velvet mauves. The albeit weak attempts at light succeed because they are done minimalistically. However, other technical weaknesses stand out: the stiffness of the window designs, the strange perspective on the clock, and the lazy vectoring in the curtains and dress on his cloak.”

“Wonderful job, in both technical and aesthetic aspects. You did an awesome job incorporating the scan intothe background. Plus, the colourful tone adds life to the wallpaper.”

“Vincent and his room, the perfect combo for the world concept! Really amazing, but I think this ideia isn’t all that original, how can I say it? It’s something a lot of people would think on doing.”

“The detail is impressive, though it doesn’t say much about the artist I feel. I’m not sure exactly how this would represent someone, rather shows off their skill more than themselves. Still, a wonderful job.”

“Firstly I love the colour palette. But why black lineart? Using pure black increases jaggedness, also for this colour scheme it slaps the viewer’s eye balls because it’s so contrasting. Stroked lineart is quite boring, next time try using shapes instead.”

“I like the simple composition, especially with the hair swirlies. But it seems too simple that it lacks the theme for this round. It is much preferable to use fill path for the outlines, and the text just looks plain and uneffective and should be placed somewhere below and back of the character (with much bigger size).”

“The design is really impressive, I’m like “waah” here, but I can’t say about the theme. There should be more things about the my world thing…”

“The eyes are over blurred and look very messy and matte. They needed some definition. Colours of the flowers and leaves could have been a tad more vibrant, they’re looking a bit dull.”

“There are alot of good elements working in this wall, but the product seems vastly unfinished:
1) The painting hasn’t been cleaned and lacks definition
2) lineart is too bulky and blurred, adding to the roughness of the painting
3) the swirls in the background have potential, but are currently too modern to complement the foreground.”

“The general composition for the background is also too dark and saturated to match the pastels in the foreground. A white background would serve to make the foreground colors pop”

“Beautifully-composed abstract wallpaper. It’s so colourful and lively, and I think you did a great job playing with those brushes. On technical aspect, it seems a bit unfitting to use painting for the character. Vectored shading would be much better, especially since her eyes look too soft and not appealing. Though the theme is not clearly portrayed.”

“The composition is most striking in this wall: the blank white shapes against an appealing grunge result in perfect execution of contrast-lining.The texture is never boring in form and the buildings look great in their shape. My only large complaint is the faded text in the background. The line-height is too large, creating a very blocky feel to that side of the wall. If the text were tighter and perhaps more varied in size + angles, it would mesh with the chaotic text better. A forced perspective where the text leans towards the center, or where the size-variation is radially dispersive would have been much more interesting.”

“This is quite adorable. The elements are well positioned and with the right touches, this would be a very fantastic wall:
1) The clouds are too round and too “vectored” to fit Goku. Some lining may help break up the flow to imitate the style of the center object.
2) The halo should overlap with his hair so it looks like its actually on top of his head.
3) The world in the background is too overfiltered, try vectoring or doing something to it.
4) The sky’s color is all wrong for the clouds + Goku. A tip: make the entire background white and then visualize which hue of color would help you out. My guess would be a bolder yellow or a punchy cyan.”

“Not sure that the graininess is– texture or manga scan remnants, but it makes the image seem low quality. Would like to see more of a tie in with the theme.”

“Nice scan extension, though full viewing it you can clearly tell what is the scan and what are the vectored extensions, maybe some slight blurring to remove the sharpness of the vector extensions would have blended better.”

“Now this is a wall that has the stones to stick with a vision. Lovely Japanese-wood block inspired sentiment is updated with the freshness of halftone-texture and paler colors. Despite the cumbersome lineart and the too-monotonous sky, this piece proves that you don’t have to be too technical to be successful.”

“Nice job in extending the scan, it looks flawlessly done. However, it lacks in the aspect of creativity and original ideas. You did express the theme nicely, but somehow the wallpaper itself looks a little bland (maybe with the colours used and lots of black/blank space).”

I’m assuming that this wall was basically done from scratch (so if its a scan manip ignore the rest of the message), so I have to point out that THIS is how one does a messy paint. Its got clean edges, the right sense of color and well placed strokes that don’t overpower the piece. a job very well done.”

“Very neat painting, and nicely use of soft pastel colours. It looks calming and peaceful, and the composition and perspective define the theme very well.”

“A great cityscape scenic with an (albeit) apocalyptic aura pulls viewers into a sense of serenity in the end. But this piece still seems largely unfinished. More buildings in the background in lighter/less impactful colors would add depth. The sky seems monotonous in color, given the bright light that emanates from the center, so some darker/different colors would go a long way. The rough edges, particularly on the objects closer to the viewer, contribute further to the sense of unfinished-ness. (sidenote: is that who I THINK it is XD)”

“Nice painting and the sky looks gorgeous. Though I think more definition is needed for the painting itself, not necessary on the background but the character. The character looks a bit unfinished and so are some parts of the background. And I don’t think you create the needed theme nicely in this piece.”

“The painting could be more neat, and I think there should have more details in the buildings… But still, amazing work, the painting is really awesome!”

Round 2 theme: I LOVE YOU

I know, strange theme. Requirements:

  • Remember, widescreen. It’s okay to have a slightly different ratio, as long as the width is at least 1920 or whatever it was.
  • In your submission PMs, link me the scan(s) you used. If you didn’t use any, just say so. I’ll say so in the judging process.
  • You must feature at least 2 subjects – by subjects they can be people, objects or anything. But they have to be subjects and we need to see two. If you think about this theme, you have a bit of space to interpret this theme. There are endless possibilities.
  • 16 days to complete this round’s entry. I’m working on getting that counter up in a day or two. I’ve been a bit busy OTL

Hope Round1 was fun for everyone !

P.S. Another great video misa 😀

One thing I remember from running the first W.A.R. was the huge variation in judges’ scores, like you mentioned in the video. After the results from the first round came out, Keltosh and I decided to drop the highest score and the lowest score from each entry for the rounds going forward. If you have the time and inclination, you can try it out on the round 1 scores and see if/how the results change, for better or for worse. I vaguely remember this helping even things out a bit, because we had some judges who went for the extreme extremes when scoring.

    • 23 kmisa

Lol, I thought about it before because I remembered that from W.A.R, but one judge consistently gave low scores while another gave consistently high scores. I didn’t want to disclude those two sets, or else it’s just pretty much the same as not having those two judges 😉 I’ll try and do the calcs sometime next week though to test it out, but I think since both judges were fairly consistent on their own scale, it didn’t particularly matter (as long as A vs B, the “better” wall is scored higher in the end) – thanks XD

      • Yeah… the thing with W.A.R. was that it wasn’t two judges consistently giving high or low scores, it was more like judges sometimes had extreme reactions to walls. Not everyone mind you, but the highest and lowest scores for each wall weren’t from the same judges each time. If there were just two consistently high or low judges, you’re right that dropping the extremes won’t matter much. I can’t remember the exact details any more, apart from scores looking more reasonable after we dropped the “ZOMG LOVE” and “ZOMG HATE” scores xD

      • reponse to lady flyin: points down..

misa if you haven’t already- why not require that each judge provides a comment with their scores? in the first round some works had 1 whilst others had 5. also this alleviates any potential concern about from wallers about scoring methodology and of course there are fewer works this time around to judge.

Please tell me the 16 days for the 2nd round start once the counter is up XD
Because if not, it means we already have 14 days left T^T

    • 27 kmisa

Oh definitely from when the counter is up, that’s why I gave y’all a date in the PM, because I gave you guys like almost an extra day since the theme came out 😉

  18. 28 ephie

you don’t know how tensed i am just to see when the results are out misa. I thought im going paranoid. XD I see awesome walls! 😀

Btw Misa, about the 2nd round, you mentioned at least 2 subjects right? So that means I can place more than 2 subjects inside? But after that sentence you mentioned that we have to put 2 subjects, which is kinda confusing.

Oh, and eh, I might be submitting it to MT pretty late, can I post the link later?

    • 29 kmisa

Hey Ephie ^^ You can submit your Round 1 entry any time. Most likely I’ll plug everyone’s links on Monday or something when I have a few more coming in (so don’t worry everyone, I’ll put them on – thanks for getting it in so quick XD)

And yep, I worded it so that there must be at least 2 – there can be more. As many as you want, actually – so if you think about it, the interpretation changes 😉

  19. 31 Jay

    I got the PM yesterday…so I think it’s like 15 days technically.

    @ DREAM

I originally wanted a comment from each judge for every entry they scored but I realised that doing it for 24 walls was too much. What I did was require every judge to download in full view (which I trust they all did) and I allocated a slot of walls judges MUST comment on so each entry received at least one comment each. So each judge was required to make at least 5 comments, which I think is a good range (not to mention scoring would also be time consuming).

Most judges commented more than the 5 out of their range (actually I think all of them did), and I think the ones that really got the most comments were the ones that had great potential, had stuff to fix (that were of concern) or were surprising.

Generally the scores I received were fairly consistent. For those with lower scores, even the highest scoring judge (who was consistently high) would dip down their score a few points on the same entry.

I’ll check the scores for Round 2, and if there are some odd scores here and there, I think I will drop the highest and lowest in each category (provided it’s not just the same judge who is scoring those).

Next round there are still 12 entries, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to have the judges make 12 comments, but this time it’ll be better because each entry will have at least 2 comments. If the HELP card isn’t used, there will be 3 comments. I’ll try to encourage the judges to comment on perhaps the entries they feel need a comment most (as extra comments) so there’s more CC floating around. Though I must say I was pleasantly surprised how much there was for this round and it was done in quite some great depth.

For Round 3 however, there will only be 6 entries, and judges will comment on all 6. 😉 So 5 comments each \o/

    • lady misa– hehe; the reason i suggested that wasn’t to make the judges lives (not yours ^^) more cumbersome but simply because as the amount of combatants still alive decreases i would expect (unless someone fails to submit or falls asleep for 2 weeks) that the scores will become much closer. a constructive comment/criticism may help to back up a judges reasoning.

but i support your reasoning and the first round overall met your objective of the stronger wall winning. that what is important. ^^

looking forward to seeing what the digital warriors come up with. i hope some1 does like a human/thing combo. that would be trippy. lol

      • 40 kmisa

Well, I’m keeping fingers crossed that the judges will comment on the majority of entries for each round lol. Besides, I suppose the semi final and the final are the crucial rounds and I’ll be sure everyone writes a comment (fairly easy, 6, then 3 comments) 😉

Heheh – hence I mentioned non-human or animals XD There’s a huge range of weird combos, and I hope we see some really really odd ones XD

  24. 41 saku

I somehow get this feeling that a round is missing XD
In the last one there will be 6 walls and only 1 will win… It’s a lot of walls XD
